چکیده

Room-temperature vulcanizing silicone and homopolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) have been used to permanently inflate detachable balloons [1] . HEMA is preferred over silicone because it is less viscous and is water soluble. Goto et al. [2] described a commercially available (HEMA A, lnterventional Therapeutics, S. San Francisco, CA) polymerizing substance that includes HEMA as the monomer, polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEDGM) as the crosslinking agent, and hydrogen peroxide and ferrous ammonium sulfate as the curing agents. Complete solidification requires a concentration of at least 42% activated HEMA mixture. Double-lumen catheters or single-lumen catheterjvent tube systems provide this required concentration, even in small balloons. A second HEMA mixture (HEMA B, Bait, Paris, France) has recently become available commercially . It also includes HEMA as the monomer, PEDGM as the cross-linker, and hydrogen peroxide and ferrous ammonium sulfate as the curing agents, although at different concentrations. We compared the two HEMA preparations in vitro.

Response characteristics of esophageal balloon catheters handmade using latex and nonlatex materials

The measurement of esophageal pressure allows for the calculation of several important and clinically useful parameters of respiratory mechanics. Esophageal pressure is often measured with balloon-tipped catheters. These catheters may be handmade from natural latex condoms and polyethylene tubing. Given the potential of natural latex to cause allergic reaction, it is important to determine whet...

Migration of BTEX and phthalates from natural rubber latex balloons obtained from the Sri Lankan market

The current study evaluates the migration of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX) and phthalates into artificial saliva from natural rubber latex (NRL) balloons available for sale in Sri Lanka. It was discovered that at least one BTEX compound migrated from almost all the brands. The migration of four phthalates; diethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, di-isobutyl phthalate and butyl ben...

Interference by hydroxyethyl starch used for vascular filling in latex agglutination test for cryptococcal antigen.

The glucuronoxylomannan component of the Cryptococcus neoformans capsular polysaccharide confers serotype specificity, and its detection in cerebrospinal fluid or serum by the latex agglutination test is used for diagnosis. Low-molecular-weight hydroxyethyl starches can be used as an alternative to albumin for vascular filling. This study reports the occurrence of a false-positive result with t...

Latex vascular occlusion balloons: histopathologic evaluation in a high-flow aortocaval fistula model.

The treatment of carotid-cavernous fistulae with intravascular, detachable latex balloons has become an accepted method. However, the histologic changes associated with such balloon embolization in a high-flow fistula state have not been described. This study evaluated the microscopic findings in a series of 12 rats studied over a 3-month period using an aortocaval fistula model. Small latex ba...

In vivo testing of the protection provided by non-latex gloves against a 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-containing acetone-based dentin-bonding product.

In dentistry, allergic contact dermatitis to acrylates and allergic contact urticaria to latex are important occupational hazards. There is a need to identify non-latex gloves which are suitable for dental work but at the same time provide adequate protection against acrylate monomers. In a previous study, a new open-chamber system was used for testing the in vivo protection of 6 different glov...
